Rosetta Stone Greek Level 1

The Rosetta Stone is language software used by those who want to learn a language other than their own. How the Rosetta Stone works to facilitate language learning is what makes this special. It is an innovative and experimental mode of learning, when compared to the standard method which involves attending a class taught by someone proficient in a certain language who teaches the grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary a textbook. Immersion Theory

There have been several different versions of the Rosetta Stone manufactured since its inception in the early 1980's. However, each version maintains the same basic learning theory on which the Rosetta Stone is founded-that of immersion, or the way children learn a language.

As a child, no one actually sits down and "teaches" you a language; you do not memorize words and their meanings, or study sentence structure. Children just naturally absorb the nuances of their native language by constantly being exposed to it. This is the basis for the Rosetta Stone's success in helping those individuals learn a language who thought they could never do such a thing. This software presents the learner with concepts and words but no direct, literal translations. Instead, you are shown a series of images which are correlated with audio of the word or text simultaneously. Memorization, therefore, is replaced by a kind of trial and error learning.

Levels of the Rosetta Stone

Version 3 of the Rosetta Stone contains from three to five levels, all of which concentrate more on conversation and grammar. The idea is to allow you to become effortlessly familiar with the language you are learning. The contents of these levels include:

Level 1: is constructed to "build a foundation of fundamental vocabulary and essential language structure". This level will take you approximately 24 hours to finish. In addition, each level offers a ten-minute conversation called a "milestone". Language basics, work and school, shopping and greetings comprise the four units of Rosetta Stone's Level One.

Level 2: This level is meant to teach you "how to navigate your surroundings as you build on the vocabulary and essential language structure introduced in Level 1". You will be exposed to more grammar rules and everyday situations such as workplace vocabulary, emotions, saying "I'm sorry" and art criticism. The four units in Level 2 cover social life, friends, travel and the past and future.

Level 3: will aid you in "connecting with the world around you by building on the language fundamentals and conversational skills developed in the previous levels". This level will concentrate more on vocabulary words relating to cooking and plants, and ways in which you can express opinions. Places, events, the world, life and health are just some of the topics covered in Level 3.

Levels 4 and 5 can be found Rosetta Stone software which teaches Spanish, English, Italian, French and German. These levels delve into the details of sentence structures, more complicated verbal tenses and further exposes you to more vocabulary words.

Learning Activities

Within the various levels of the Rosetta Stone you will hear a word or sentence being spoken, view the text of the verbal sounds and then pick a picture which you think is associated with what you just heard. If your answer is correct, you will be allowed to proceed. If it isn't, then you must attempt it again until the right answer is chosen. Mistakes, according to the Rosetta Stone theory of learning, is vital to the success of the learning process and should enhance your ability to remember and recall words and rules of the new language you are learning.

Great Product

I have had this Rosetta Stone Greek level 1 for about 2 weeks now and I love it. The lessons are very interactive and completely immerse you in Greek. You can repeat things as much as you want before moving on and the extra resources of the audio for when you're away from your computer and the mobile companion are fabulous extra practice. I just completed unit 1 and signed up for what they call a studio session, which is where you get to practice what you've been learning live with a real Greek person. I was really nervous but it was great. Now, I think the product is great, but you do have to be motivated. I'm a teacher and I know that my students don't always put in the time so they might remember the most current stuff but not the older material. You've got to keep up with it, review, do it every day, take notes, etc. If you do it passively, I'm not sure how much you're going to get out of it because when there's no English, you really have to remember, so do it on a regular basis.

This is such an improvement over previous versions. I really enjoy the content as well as the options to talk with native speakers as you progress through the program.
