When I discovered the Pivot Tables, I thought formulas were not needed any more. The fact is that I started to use PTs massively in my daily assignments. The first obstacle I found was that many old users hated this feature (I think many of them didn't understand it and were ashamed to ask). Moreover, in the course of my use of Pivot Tables I found other things not so appealing.

Here is my list...

Occupies more space than necessary in the sheet
Fills the sheet with too many columns to the right. It does not allow you to specify in advance which fields you want to show
It is not so easy to change the report layout by dragging and dropping the fields that are already in the drop panel (at first glance you cannot perceive the border of each field area)
Offers limited formulas functionality in the calculated fields
Does not allow you to see the source data of the output in the frontend. You need to double click on any given value to see the source data but a sheet is generated
You cannot alter the layout of the PT report. You cannot add, delete, move columns/rows away from the report
The output is not immediately updated to reflect the backend changes
Having a report formula linked to a PT report is dangerous when someone change the PT report layout, the cell reference is then out of control
Having a report formula linked to a PT report is dangerous since the formulas are not updated as well
When you double click a value in the data area to see its source data, the PT populates your workbook with as many sheets as double clicks

Conclusion

If you want to not deal with above issues at all cost, then you must use pure formula. Excel disposes of the functions and with a few workarounds you can achieve almost the same PT functionality. The time prohibitive nature of writing so many of the formulas on the go is compensated with the advantages it brings. Writing formulas takes time but the results are worth the effort.

Cannot translate docx files as claimed

I bought this specifically to translate docx files to doc files. I have tried numerous docx files and the ending doc format is always corrupted badly. This product simply does not do what it is supposed to. Don't waste your money.

Great File Translator

I've been using this product for years. It has always opened up files on my mac, whether they were created in word perfect, etc. I've even used it to open windows files from my friends, when they're windows machines couldn't open them. I translated them to different windows formats and given them back to my friends to open and they worked fine. I haven't used this new version but I want to try it. My older version needs to be updated.
